After a Mammogram

Within the BreastScreen program, all mammograms are independently read by two specially trained doctors (radiologists) and your results should be sent to you in about 2 weeks. If you agree, your results will also be sent to your doctor.

As the screening test only looks for evidence of breast cancer, a detailed report describing any non-cancerous (benign) breast changes will not be sent.

Most women will receive a letter indicating a normal result and they will be invited to re-attend for a screening mammogram at the appropriate time. However, some women are asked to return for a repeat screening mammogram simply because of technical problems.

Some women need to have additional tests at one of our assessment clinics because their x-rays show changes in their breasts. Such tests may include additional breast x-rays, an ultrasound and breast examination. Most women (9 out of 10) who are asked to return do not have breast cancer.
